Corrosion is a natural process, converting a refined metal to a more stable form, such as its oxide or hydroxide which imposes large costs on the industries. It is the gradual destruction of materials (usually metals) by chemical reaction with their environment. Corrosion degrades the useful properties of materials and structures including strength, appearance and permeability to liquids and gases. The amount by which a corrosion coating reduces the rate of corrosion varies, depending on the kind of metal and its environment. Adding nanoparticles to the coatings, depending on the type of nanoparticles, improves the corrosion resistance due to different mechanisms.
