Iran's New Standard for Nanoemulsions Accepted by ISO: A Milestone in Nanotechnology Regulation

Iran's New Standard for Nanoemulsions Accepted by ISO: A Milestone in Nanotechnology Regulation

Iran's proposal for a new international standard titled "Nanotechnology - Nanoemulsions - Specifications, Characteristics, and Measurement Methods" has been officially accepted by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). This decision follows a year of technical evaluations and voting by 40 member countries of the ISO Nanotechnology Committee.

The standard aims to establish clear definitions and measurement methods for nanoemulsions, which are increasingly used across various industries, including pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food. Developed by an Iranian nanotechnology manufacturing company with support from the International Affairs at the Iran Nano & Micro Technologies Innovation Council (INIC), the proposal seeks to provide a comprehensive method for assessing the characteristics of nanoemulsions. It will also outline standardized measurement methods to ensure stability and reliability in testing.

The growing market for nanoemulsions, known for their unique properties such as enhanced solubility and bioavailability, has highlighted the need for international standards. Currently, the absence of such standards poses challenges for manufacturers, researchers, and regulatory bodies, leading to inconsistencies in product quality and effectiveness.

The newly accepted standard is expected to aid manufacturers in producing high-quality nanoemulsion products while ensuring compliance with legal requirements. Furthermore, it aims to enhance collaboration among stakeholders in the industry.

Typically, the development of an international standard takes about three years. Notably, Iran has played a significant role in this area, having led the development of 12 out of 110 international standards published by the ISO Nanotechnology Committee. Iran currently ranks fourth globally in the number of developed international nanotechnology standards, following the United States, Japan, and South Korea, alongside the United Kingdom.
