Ms. Elmira Velaee, a researcher in faculty of engineering in Shahid Madani University explained her plan for development of a water and oil separation system which can be used in various industries in which a considerably huge amount of oily waste is produced. This issue has augmented pollution level of environment and increased global environmental concerns.
In addition, leakage and flow of oil during transportation or production are considered as important problems for sea environment and ecosystem. Therefore, separation and purification of water and oil system have been a challenging issue in recent years which requires new scientific methods and techniques. Thus, there is a great demand for the development of effective and inexpensive methods to remove all kinds of pollutants from sea water and also remove oil pollution from industrial wastes.
She said: “Separation of water from oil has been one of the most challenging issues in recent years. Oil drainage into environment leads to a number of environmental problems and also damage to natural ecosystem. It should also be mentioned that, due to the flammability of oil, secondary environmental pollution occurrence causes major concerns for human health.”
“Regardless of environmental pollution, separation of oil from water is required for a wide group of chemical processes and water crisis in many lands has increased the demand for development of more effective technology,” she added.
Describing her project on water and oil separation, she insisted on development of filters with specific wettability consisting of metal oxide nanostructures, which can be used for immiscible mixtures as well as emulsions. In this project, basic infrastructures for development of these filters have been investigated and the basic challenges for market entry have been identified.
Separation of water and oil is generally conducted in various industries for two purposes: oil purification and water purification. Thus, the developed product has many applications in various industries, including refineries, petrochemicals, power plants, etc. A filter with specific wettability can be used to remove oil from wastes and purify oil for its reuse in refineries, petrochemicals, and power plants.
