Active presence of IRAN in the Nanotechnology Committee meeting of the International Organization for Standardization

Active presence of IRAN in the Nanotechnology Committee meeting of the International Organization for Standardization

The ISO TC/229 Technical Committee meeting was held from the 20th to the 24th of April this year, both in-person and virtually, consisting of 5 working groups. Iranian representatives participated actively in virtual sessions of working groups 3 (Health, Safety, and Environment) and 4 (Nanomaterials Characteristics). During these meetings, approved standards are discussed, new standard topics are approved, and the expert opinions of member countries are considered for ongoing standards development.

At this conference, the nanomask standards, which Iran was actively developing within the ISO framework, were introduced, and the project manager responded to technical input from experts representing other countries.

In 2022, Iran first introduced this standard, which later underwent final-stage voting for approval at the conference. Furthermore, Iran's previously proposed standards for defining the properties and features of nanoemulsions in the nanotechnology sector were deliberated and examined during this session, and it was sent for voting after the conference's approval.

Additionally, two new standard proposals were introduced during this session. The first proposal focused on zinc oxide nanoparticles and was approved for the PWI stage within the fourth working group. The second proposed standard, presented during the session, centered around nanobubbles.

So far, ISO has issued 109 standards covering various nanotechnology sectors. With our country's contribution to drafting 12 of these standards, we rank fourth among the most active members of ISO.

The process of drafting international standards usually takes 2 to 3 years. The foundation for drafting these standards within the ISO relies on global consensus among member nations. Throughout the various stages of standard development, member countries of technical committees contribute diverse expert opinions to refine and expand the standards. In the ISO's Technical Committee on Nanotechnology Standards, 40 countries are serving as principal members and 16 countries as observer members.
