Eco-Friendly Superabsorbent Polymers Based on Wheat Straw Cellulose Nanofiber

A research team at Shahid Beheshti University has synthesized an eco-friendly superabsorbent polymer from wheat straw.

The prototype synthesized by the team has several competitive advantages compared to similar products in the market. The most important one is lowering the production cost to one-third of regular superabsorbents. In addition, due to the usage of cellulose in the process, the toxicity of the product and its allergic problems, when used in diapers for instance, are resolved.

The raw material used in the production of this superabsorbent is all natural which makes it 100% eco-friendly.

Dr. Seyed Rahman Jafari Petroudy and Dr. Esmaeil Rasooly Garmaroody, both faculty members and Jalal Ranjbar, master’s graduate at Shahid Beheshti University, are key team members working on this project. The result of their work is published in the Journal of Carbohydrate Polymers with an impact factor of 5.1.
