Cellulose is one of the main ingredients in the paper industry and it is best found in trees.  Excessive use of trees to produce paper however, has resulted in deforestation. Therefore, several studies have been conducted to replace cellulose with another substance that is cheap and easy to use.

“This project aims at using sugar crane instead of cellulose. This approach enhances the mechanical, physical and optical properties of the produced papers and increases the rate of the production process. In addition, the final product is environmentally friendly” said Milad Tajik, one the senior researchers in this project.

This research is mainly conducted by Milad Tajik and Hossein Jalali from Shahid Beheshti University, Hossein Resalati, faculty member at Sari Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources University, and Yahya Hamze, faculty member at Tehran University. The results of their investigations are published in Carbohydrate Polymers Journal (IF: 4.811).
