Iran has submitted two new proposals for the development of international standards in nanotechnology to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), focusing on silica aerogel-based thermal insulation coatings and graphene-based materials for electrochemical energy storage.
The proposals are part of Iran’s continued activities in international nanotechnology standardization. To date, 13 international nanotechnology standards have been developed and published under Iran’s responsibility. Iran is also among the active countries in international nanotechnology standardization, ranking fourth after the United States, the Republic of Korea, and Japan. Iran is an active member of ISO/TC 229, the ISO Technical Committee on Nanotechnologies.
The first proposal focuses on the development of an international standard for silica aerogel-based thermal insulation coatings. The proposed standard will address the characteristics of these coatings as well as methods for their measurement and evaluation.
Silica aerogels, owing to their nanoporous structure and thermal insulation properties, are among the materials attracting attention for the development of advanced thermal insulation coatings. An international standard in this field could provide a common framework for evaluating and comparing the performance of such products.
The second proposal concerns graphene-based materials for electrochemical energy storage. The proposed standard will focus on the performance evaluation of graphene-based materials used in energy-storage systems and could provide a basis for standardized methods to assess and compare their performance.
This area has gained increasing importance with the development of advanced energy-storage technologies, including batteries and supercapacitors.
The next meeting of ISO/TC 229 will be held in Mexico from October 19 to 23, 2026. Representatives from Iran will participate in the meeting remotely. The meeting will review activities of the ISO Technical Committee on Nanotechnologies as well as standards currently under development.
Through its continued participation in ISO/TC 229 and the submission of new standardization proposals, Iran is contributing to international efforts to establish common frameworks for the characterization and performance evaluation of emerging nanomaterials and nanotechnology-based products.
