Iran and Russia Agree to Expand Nanotechnology Cooperation at BRICS Summit

Representatives from Iran and Russia have reached an agreement to enhance their cooperation in nanotechnology during discussions at the BRICS summit. The focus will be on fostering scientific collaboration between the Iran Nano & Micro Technologies Innovation Council (INIC) and the Russian Academy of Sciences, including the exchange of professors and students, joint research projects, and the publication of findings in each other's journals. A formal agreement outlining these initiatives is expected to be signed soon.

In a meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit, representatives from Iran and Russia discussed ways to expand interactions and cooperation in nanotechnology between institutes under the Russian Academy of Sciences. The meeting focused on four key areas: developing scientific cooperation through exchanging professors and students; initiating and calling for joint research projects; publishing scientific articles in each party's journals; and enhancing knowledge through holding joint short-term scientific courses. It was decided that a separate agreement would be signed between Iran's Nanotechnology Headquarters and the Russian Academy of Sciences covering these areas.

During the meeting, Iranian representatives showcased Iran's advancements in nanotechnology, highlighting its role in developing national and international standards. They also emphasized the importance of the Iran Nano & Micro Technologies Innovation Council (INIC) in spearheading these efforts.

Russian officials pointed out promising areas for collaboration, such as the design of nano-based materials utilizing artificial intelligence and neural networks, particularly in partnership with Moscow State University. They also proposed publishing joint articles in the English-language journal " Pattern Recognition," indexed in the Scopus database.

In response, Iranian representatives noted the potential for creating a comprehensive database leveraging the capabilities of their laboratory network. They discussed utilizing artificial intelligence in 260 Iranian-manufactured devices, marking another prospective joint project.

Further discussions included the introduction of a microelectronics technology center at the Moscow Institute of Electronics and Technology (MIET), which offers a full production cycle service. MIREA University also expressed interest in hosting exhibitions of Iranian nanotechnology products and emphasized the importance of defining specific topics for joint projects.

The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing to sign a memorandum of understanding encompassing four main areas of cooperation:
  1. Exchanging professors and students through a twinning program.
  2. Participating in short-term training and research courses.
  3. Defining joint projects in microelectronics, artificial intelligence, and materials genome.
  4. Collaborating on scientific journals and publishing joint articles.
This agreement marks a pivotal step in strengthening the scientific and technological ties between Iran and Russia within the BRICS framework.
