Seventh International Iran-led Standard in Nanotechnology has been published

International Iran-led standard developed for polymeric food packaging entitled “Nanotechnologies- Polymeric nanocomposite films for food packaging with barrier properties — specification of characteristics and measurement methods” has recently been published.

After four years of continuous efforts conducted by a working group under supervision of Iran Nanotechnology Innovation Council (INIC), the seventh international Iran-led standard in nanotechnology has finally been published.

The proposal was presented to the International Standard Organization (ISO) by INIC and a company manufacturing nanocomposite food packaging, in 2016. After the approval of Iran's proposal by members of ISO's Technical Committee on nanotechnology (ISO/TC229), various studies were conducted, and expert meetings were held with national and international experts to develop the proposed standard. The standard was finally released in June 2020 and it is now available at the official ISO website (www.iso.org).

This standard addresses the barrier property of polymeric nanocomposite films to improve the quality of food packaging. The barrier property includes the exchange of gas (e.g. oxygen) and water vapor as well as Ultraviolet-Visible light transparency.

International standards are developed based on global consensus among member states. These members from Technical committees express their expert comments and opinions at different standard development stages. Development of international standards usually takes 3 to 4 years. ISO's Technical Committee on Nanotechnology includes 36 participating members and 18 observing members
