Nano Fiber Removes Power Plant Pollution

Although air pollution level of big cities surges dangerously in these days, most of researchers believe that pollution level could decrease considerably in cold seasons by using clean fuels and up-to-date technologies.

International Collaboration Program on a clean transportation is an action supported by several leading organizations, including Climate Leadership Program (C40 cities), Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) and International Council of Clean Transportation (ICCT), the United Nations Environment Program and the Centro Mario Molina Chile and have been launched by commitment of 40 big cities committed to take steps toward clean air.
Mazut (furnace oil) is considered as a major cause of air pollution in big cities. It is a low-quality heavy fuel oil, used in power plants and similar applications. In order to reduce the emission of pollutants, either they should be replaced with a suitable fuel or a filter should be installed to prevent the emission of air pollutants.
Considering that sulfur derivatives in mazut are the main causes of pollution, removing this element can reduce up to 90% of pollutant emission. Therefore, the two methods of removing sulfur derivatives could be considered: removing derivatives from fuel before entering the power plant and removing sulfur derivatives using suitable filters.
“Nano filters are categorized into two sectors i.e., application for ‘inlet air’ and ‘outlet air’ and any factory that utilize an engine or a turbine, has an inlet air. The factory can provide Iranian products with ‘nano fiber’ technology such as nano fiber producer as well as nano filters” Dr. Najimi, head industry group of INIC said. He stated that some other manufacturers use Iranian filters which are used for outlet air.
Currently, 30 Iranian power plants as well as oil and gas companies use these types of filters in their units. Important points about these achievements are as follow:
  • The new generation of nano filter with the ability to absorb soot
 Where air pollution of big cities causes many problems, Iranian researchers’ innovation has helped to remove hydrocarbon pollutants of the environment. Soot filter can be used on all types of diesel vehicles. This air filter has the ability to absorb particles smaller than 2.5 microns.
  • Export-oriented power plant filters
Another Iranian company produces industrial nano filters and exports its power plant filters to foreign countries. Nanofibers are used in air filters of this company. Car combustion air filters can absorb and separate suspended particles. Industrial and power plant filters of this company have favorable features such as better protection of power plant turbine parts, reduction of downtime costs, increase of power generation capacity, and increase of filter lifetime.
  • Production of nano filters for air sampling
The researchers from Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences have succeeded in development of a crystalline silica sampling filter, which is used in quantitative and qualitative measurements of air pollutants.
  • Production of woven media for industrial air filters
Suspended particles from mineral and cement production processes are considered as important factors causing air pollution. Researchers from Amir Kabir University of Technology made efforts to produce woven media for industrial filters. Technology of producing woven filter media made of heat-resistant mineral fibers and evaluation of the quality performance of woven filter media are among major achievements of this research group.
  • Industrial production of air filters
 The country's researchers produced nanostructured air filters for inlet air of turbines and industrial compressors with anti-dust and hydrophobic capabilities. These filters have the ability to separate liquid from liquid or liquid from gas. The filter substrate is covered with nanofibers which will increase the efficiency of the filter.
  • Reducing air pollution with industrial nano filters
Due to the presence of nanofibers in industrial filters made by an Iranian company, this product has higher ability to absorb pollutants trap particles below 2.5 microns.
  • Decontamination with polymer nanofibers
Iranian researchers succeeded in producing industrial filters containing polymer nanofibers which have the ability to remove pollutants from factories outlet of industries such as cement, steel, flour, etc. that create dust during production. Nano filters have the ability to remove dust to a significant level due to high absorption and surface filtration.
  • Power plant filter with nanofiber technology
 By acquiring nanofiber production technology, the country's researchers succeeded in industrial production of upgraded power plant filters which increases the annual power plant productivity. Currently, Bandar Abbas combined cycle power plant uses these filters and depreciation of the turbine blades reduced considerably. Increased filter lifetime, control of pressure drop, significant increase in filtration efficiency, increase in energy conversion efficiency, and reducing equipment repairing time are among major advantages of using these filters.
