Publication of the 12th international Nano standard under the responsibility of the Islamic Republic of Iran

The twelfth international standard in the field of Nanotechnology compiled under the supervision of the Iran Nanotechnology Innovation Council, entitled "Nanotechnology – Super hydrophobic Coatings and Surfaces: Characteristics and Performance Evaluation" was published as ISO/TS 10689:2023.

 October 07, 2023  Standard & Certification
Surfaces or coatings that are difficult to wet with water can be considered Super hydrophobic. Various methods have been used to produce super-hydrophobic surfaces and coatings. Due to their properties, super-hydrophobic surfaces and coatings have many applications in various industries such as automotive, construction, healthcare, optics, and electronics . The market for super-hydrophobic surfaces and coatings for 2020 was about $1.8 billion.
Super-hydrophobic surfaces and coatings are usually subjected to different working and environmental conditions. Still, unfortunately, despite the large market, there was no standard for evaluating the durability of super-hydrophobic surfaces and coatings. This standard aims to determine the performance evaluation methods of super-hydrophobic surfaces and coatings under different working and environmental conditions and weather. The evaluation criteria are the comparison of the advance angle, retreat angle, and contact angle lag of the samples before and after exposure to the aforementioned working and environmental conditions. In addition, this document facilitates communication between interested parties.
So far, a total of 104 international standards have been published by the Technical Committee of ISO/TC229 Nano Technology Standards, of which 12 standards have been developed under the supervision of the Islamic Republic of Iran. Compilation of international standards usually takes 2 to 3 years. The basis of developing international standards in the ISO organization is global consensus by the member countries. The member countries of the technical committees provide various expert opinions for the completion and development of the standard at different stages of standard development. There are 39 countries as main members and 18 are observer members in the Technical Committee of ISO Nanotechnology Standards. With the publication of the above standard, Iran has developed the most Nano standards in the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) after the United States, Japan, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.
