Global energy demand and environmental pollution are increasing almost every day. Therefore, finding renewable energy sources is vital. The nature of electronic states and energy-electron transfer processes in organic photochemical processes have been studied over the past 40 years. The obtained knowledge of molecular organic photochemistry could be utilized in covalent organic frameworks and polymers as novel visible light photocatalysts. Covalent organic framework (COF) is considered as a new class of crystalline porous materials with significant potential applications. Due to their unique properties such as high surface area, high porosity, thermal and chemical stability, and low density, they have been studied in many research fields, esp. photocatalysis. Different COFs are made through various innovative organic reactions.
In this article, recent advances in the use of covalent organic frameworks as novel heterogeneous photocatalysts (including primary, functionalized, and hybrid COFs) in organic chemistry reactions were discussed. Furthermore, they were classified and described based on their links. The mechanisms of reactions and impacts of various factors on COF photocatalysts performance were also discussed.
Authors of this article include Ms. Saba Daliran (postdoctoral researcher), Dr. Oveisi (faculty member of Zabol University), and other researchers from three Spanish universities (Valencia Polytechnic University, University of Madrid, and University of Córdoba) published their outcomes in the journal of “Advanced Materials” with an impact factor of 32.
