Nowadays, the nanotechnology has set up a wide variety of research projects and introduced a large number of novel applications and products in several areas including health and medicine, agriculture and environment both in Iran and in the world. Such products such as disinfectants, medicines, home appliances, clothing, and agriculture products are developed to improve the quality of life. Therefore, a broad spectrum of these products are either produced in or imported to Iran. Therefore, it seems unavoidable to further put the focus on the significance of nano products safety. Given Iran’s pioneering role in nanotechnology development, any overestimation or underestimation about the potential risks can strongly affect the development of this technology in Iran.
Regarding the necessity of abiding by the health, safety, and environmental regulations in nanotechnology, ‘Nanotechnology Standardization Committee of Iran Nanotechnology Innovation Council (INIC)’ proposed the establishment of Iran Nano Safety Network (INSN) in early 2011. The aim behind this network was to provide an appropriate environment for domestic interested researchers and relevant institutions to join the network and make their activities convergent towards the specific organizational plans for the development of standards, guidelines, and regulations for safety and environmental issues of nanotechnology. Therefore, in a mid-term prospect, INSN will be able to play an important role in the sustainable development of nanotechnology and its safe products.
By early 2012, the initial studies were completed with some major subjects: (1) identification of experts and active institutions in nanoscience and nanotechnology, (2) preparation of initial draft for the required regulations, and (3) forming the foundation and strategic council and discussing the overall plans as well as the short-term, mid-term and long-term objectives of the network.
Since summer 2012, this network has officially started its activities and becomes currently involved in the education, enactment of standards and regulations, and establishment of necessary infrastructures in the field of nanotechnology.
